King Valagambah in his efforts to promote Buddhism commissioned the building of many temples. Devanagala Raja Maha Viharaya on the Devanagala rock is one such temple. The western side has the famous “Balana” pass, famed for its ability to trap and destroy the Portuguese who attacked the Hill Capital time after time. A little below is the shape of a white dagoba or sthupa situated on top of a circular rock. This is the Devanagala Viharaya. The climb from the bottom will take about 45 minutes.
