A total of 270 faunal species were recorded in the lagoon and the surrounding ecosystems. Among them 130 species are birds which are inhabitants of the mangrove and marshy habitats. Two out of the top seven animals (Asian Elephant and Saltwater Crocodile), which were declared by the Department of Wildlife conservation are among the inhabitants of the lagoon. Urani is the place where the elephants can be seen very closely from the lagoon side, as seen in the picture below. A large number of migratory bird species as well as water birds can be seen in the lagoon. The rich mangrove vegetation of the lagoon comprises of 13 species of both true mangrove species and mangrove associates.
